It is well known that physical activity is one of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy body and a clear mind. Walking is a simple and effective way to increase your physical activity and achieve health benefits.


Professor Bente Klarlund has given 10 explanations for why both body and mind benefit from putting one foot in front of the other. This includes reducing the risk of dementia, blood clots and cancer, strengthening the heart and making you more creative.


A recent study followed 4,840 Americans over a ten-year period and concluded that the more steps you take, the longer you will live. The risk of early death was 50 percent lower among participants who walked 8,000 steps daily compared to those who walked only 4,000 steps. Walking 10,000 steps every day can therefore extend your life.


Physical activity can also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, and the more you walk, the more intensively you walk, the greater the effect it has on blood sugar. If you already have type 2 diabetes, regular walking can help regulate blood sugar.


Walking can also reduce the risk of at least 13 different types of cancer. Large population studies with more than 1.4 million people show that a physically active lifestyle reduces the risk of cancer.


Finally, many studies show that physical activity can reduce the risk of heart disease. A large study of American female nurses showed that physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease. Walking is an effective way to counteract this, and those who walked the most had a more than halved risk of blood clots in the heart.


There are many other benefits of walking, including improving mood, reducing stress, increasing energy levels and improving the quality of sleep. That is why it is important to make it a habit to go for a walk every day.
